To manage our fish resources effectively, recreational (sport) fishing in the sea is enforced by specific rules and regulations.
Accordingly, fishers are required to meet minimum catch sizes, not to use certain engines, to stay within designated zones and not fish outside fishing seasons. Fishers should contact the competent public federation or department (at France's regional land and sea departments) to find out the applicable regulations at the chosen fishing site.
General regulations include:
Limit yourself to small catches for personal and family needs. Remember it is against the law to sell fish caught from recreational fishing.
Only keep fish which meets regulation size (above the minimum size enforced by regulations; see minimum catch sizes)
Mark fish belonging to the species listed by clipping the lower part of the caudal fin (see list of species for which fin clipping is practised)
Stay within designated zones and respect periods when fishing is allowed or prohibited
Respect the list of protected marine species prohibited for collection (see protected marine species)
Do not interfere with professional fishing equipment (nets, main lines, baskets, etc.)
For underwater fishing, the following applies:
You must be over 16
You must have insurance to practice this activity
Do not use breathing apparatus
Light sources are prohibited.
Make your presence known on the surface using a buoy and a flag
Do not practice underwater fishing at night (for more information on recreational fishing at sea, download the brochure from the fishing ministry)
