A boat licence is compulsory for anyone wanting to pilot a motor boat with an engine power higher than 4.5 kilowatts on the sea or river.
If you borrow a boat, you must have on your person all the necessary sailing documentation (above all licence and 'acte de francisation' (boat registration) and a letter from the owner certifying you have authorisation to use the boat.
If you hire a boat, in addition to the required sailing documentation, you must have the signed rental agreement on you.
No licence is required to pilot a sailboat or a motor yacht propelled by an engine with power below 4.5 kW (6.11 hp).
