Les Eaux Salées is the first creek you come to in Carry-le-Rouet when travelling from Marseille.
Walk for just a few minutes and the wild and tranquil setting of the creek amidst a forest of Aleppo pines opens up before you. Great views of the sea, Marseille and its islands.
Les Eaux Salées (literally 'salty waters') is named after its brackish source. Its clear waters lap gently on the beautifully ragged coastline. The medium-sized creek opens out into the sea and has a beach of large smooth stones. The Eaux Salées viaduct (a listed monument built a hundred years ago) overlooks this privileged spot where scuba diving and sea kayaking are popular pursuits. Close to shore you can see the rocky islet of Grand Mornas (also known as Grande Mona).
Pedestrian access
From Le Rouet beach: Follow the private path to the left of Le Rouet car park which runs along the beach then continue up to Notre Dame du Rouet Chapel. At the top, leave the road and follow the footpath to your left (a sign points to Les Eaux Salées). Walk through the big green gates and down the narrow steps to your right. The footpath follows the rail tracks. When you come close to the bridge, go down the large steps to the beach.
From La Madrague de Gignac: Follow the Douaniers footpath for about 30 minutes.
